New York December 2000

We flew to New York JFK Airport in December 2000 for a 3 night stay with Lufthansa via Frankfurt. At the time, Lufthansa was cheaper than everybody else and the tax was reasonable, but now the taxes are so high, it is cheaper to travel direct with Continental or American or British Airways. I have flown Lufthansa before on Long haul and Short Haul in economy and business class and always found them to be very good.

We had booked into the Grand Hyatt New York which was next door to Grand Central Station in downtown Manhattan. The hotel was lovely and very central for all attractions. I know that New York is a different city to what it was when I was last there, as 9 months after my visit September 11 took place. I have been to New York previously in 1993 and stayed at the Howard Johnson Broadway. I think December is the best month to go, although it is freezing and there is a good chance of snow, it is lovely to see all the Christmas displays in the department stores and go ice skating in Central Park or the Rockerfeller Centre. We had gone mostly for Christmas shopping, but did some sightseeing too.

The shops are amazing and there is so much choice, at Christmas time you sometime have to queue to see the window displays in the large department stores such as Macy's, Bloomingdale's and other stores. We were lucky enough to be able to go up the Twin Towers, and the view was spectacular. The Empire State building should also be visited as that is also great as it has children's activities as week as tours and shops. Getting around is easy, as well as hundreds of yellow cabs, there is also the subway and lots of buses, and you can buy transport passes.

We took the Staten Island Ferry to Staten Island and also went to the Statue of Liberty where there is a museum as well as the Statue. You can get fantastic views of the skyscrapers as you leave towards the Island. It does get very busy at weekends so I would go as early as possible so that you do not have to Queue for hours. There are hundreds of tours that you can book from walking tours to bus tours or even book a limo tour. The NYC Tourist Council is very helpful for hotels, transport, tours and caters for your every need. There are also helicopter tours available. We had booked a bus tour which takes you to all the famous landmarks including Wall Street, (could not believe how small the street was...), Brooklyn Bridge, Empire State, and many other landmarks.

One area I would recommend is Little Italy and China Town, which can be reached by cab or underground. It has hundreds of shops, restaurant's and stalls where you can buy fake designer goods such as Gucci. Dior handbags, sunglasses and other accessories. Beware if buying perfume as a friend of mine bought a bottle of perfume from a sidewalk and when she got it home, it was coloured scented water!!!!.

There are so many things to do in New York, I could not possibly list them all. Times Square is a must see with all the shops, restaurants and giant billboards. It is always so busy but is just buzzing. This is also near to Broadway where all the theatres are. There are shows on Broadway to suit every taste whether it be a musical or play. There are lots of museums in New York to visit, to suit every taste. The New Yorkers also like their sport, so there is ice hockey, baseball, football (American), and basketball to name a few.

Shopping in New York at the moment or anywhere in the States is a shoppers dream because of the exchange rate. The amount of Dollars to the British Pound is at one of the highest it has been for a long time, so things like clothes, ipods, cameras and other items are so much cheaper than anywhere else. When I was there last 8 years ago it was just average, but shopping is cheaper in the US generally anyway, and eating out is very cheap and you get huge portions. There are hundreds of places to eat in New York from Restaurants to Delis and cafes. There are 24 hour openings and lots of stalls selling pizza, hot dogs, donuts and other foods. There are also hotels to suit every budget from hostels and budget hotels to luxury 5* Hotels.

Once you have been to New York, it is easy to see why they call it the City that never sleeps as there is always something going on at every hour of the day and night. I love New York and want to go back, but I think it will be strange not seeing the Twin Towers high above the other sky scrapers as you approach Manhattan, and knowing the tragedy that has taken place since my last visit makes me a little apprehensive. But one day I will be back and will do all things that I missed on my previous 2 trips, including the Sex and the City Tour!!!! I do highly recommend a trip to this fantastic city, and I know most people only visit for 3 nights or so, but there is so much more to do.

Boston Fam Trip 1999

This was a Familiarisation trip hosted by United and Scandinavian Airlines. We flew from Heathrow on 9th April for a 3 night stay with United Airlines. There were 9 of us and we were told that we were being upgraded to Business and First Class. As there only a few seats in First Class, it was decided that it would be a lottery which ever boarding card we got is where we would be seated. I was lucky enough to be given seat 1C which was in the first Class Cabin. The flights were great and the crew really friendly.

There was an endless supply of food and drink and our group were invited by Pilot and Co Pilot to sit in the cockpit (It would never be allowed now since 9/11, so we were very lucky!!!!). We had booked into the Omni Parker House Hotel in Downtown Boston. The hotel is a luxury hotel and we all had our own rooms which were huge!!. The Hotel was central for shops, restaurants and is on the Freedom Trail. The first night we got there, we went to the Cheers Bar for a meal. The exterior was used in Cheers, but the first thing I noticed was how small it is inside. There is a downstairs which is used as the restaurant and that is bigger. The proper name for the Cheers bar is the Bull and Finch pub. The food was nice and they had quite a large menu of snacks and meals.

Boston is very Irish and there are flags everywhere, and lots of Irish bars and carts on streets selling scarves, flags and lots of other Irish Memorabilia. Boston is the most Irish of all the American Cities. The shopping in Boston is great and you can pick up some real bargains. Filenes Basement is the place to pick up designer bargains!!!! It has up to 70% off designer labels, but be warned you have to be prepared root!!!!!, (as it can look like a jumble sale!!!!)

When we were there, it must have been near prom night as there were hundreds of prom dresses and they were strewn everywhere. They also do Bridal wear. Copley Place is home to Gucci, Tiffany &Co, Neiman Marcus, Louis Vuitton and much more. There is also high street shopping with stores such as H & M and Saks of Fifth Avenue. Boston was also home to F.A.O Schwartz which was one of the Worlds largest Toy Stores. Apparently the shop is no longer there and the only memory is the 12 foot bronze teddy bear.

Boston is famous for Harvard and law so we took a trip to Harvard Square and had a look round. Harvard is huge, it is like a small town or village and the houses in the area are New England style and are used mostly as Student Accomodation. The student accomodation in the UK is nowhere are nice as these. The transport is good in Boston, there is the subway and plenty of buses and taxis. There are lots of restaurants in Boston and a lot of them are seafood restaurants where you can eat the catch of the day!!!!. Not being big on seafood or fish myself, I struggled a bit as it seemed to be everywhere we went.

One thing you must do on a trip to Boston is the Duck Tour!!!! The duck tours are mad, but great fun!!!! The tour is taken on a duckbus/boat and you are greeted by a Conducktour!!!!. The Tour is 80 minutes long, 60 minutes on the bus seeing the sights by road and then 20 minutes when it becomes a boat and onto the Charles River. The Conducktours tell you to shout Quack Quack everytime you see another duck on the road or on the river. It really is good fun and I would recommend it. It is approx $29 for adults and $19 for children.

If the Duck Tour does not tickle your fancy, you could try the Boston Trolley Tour. The Trolley Tour is a 1 hour tour but you han hop on and off as you please, as the pass is valid all day and is approx $28 for adults and free for children under 11. These are the approx prices if booked online.
We went to Dicks Last Resort for Brunch, which is in the Quincy Market Building. Dicks last resort is a restaurant/bar which offers Barbecue/buffets/appetizers, drinks and much more. They have live bands on and gospel choirs. The staff are funny and come out with wise crack remarks. I think the theory behind it is the more rude they are, the more you are supposed to tip. I have also been to Dicks in San Diego and Chicago and it is good fun and the food is delicious!!!!

There were about 11 of us in total, and one of the guys in our group was trying to be clever, so the waitress made a Dunce Cap for him and made him wear it all afternoon!!!!! The portions are big as well, so if you decide to visit, go hungry!!!! I believe that one has just opened inside the Excalibur Hotel in Las Vegas.

There is lots to do and see in Boston including the Freedom Trail which is a 2.5 mile red brick walking trail which takes you to 16 Nationally Historic Sights. We went on a Whale Watching trip with Boston Harbour Cruises. The trip is 3 hrs and is approx USD36 plus tax. The sea was quite choppy and a couple of us were sea sick, but we did see quite a few Whales and Dolphins.

There is a famous Pub Crawl for those who like to try different bars and drinks. It can be pre booked on the Party Bus. As I mentioned before, Boston is very Irish and there are loads of Irish Bars and pubs. There is even an Irish pub Directory so you can find out where they all are!!!!!!

There are lots of Museums on Boston for the young and old including The Childrens Museum, Computer Museum, Museum of Science and the Museum of Fine Arts which is home to paintings by Van Gogh, Picasso and owns the largest Monet Collection outside Paris!!!!! If you are visiting Boston for a few days, it may be worthwhile to purchase a Go Card. It can be bought for 2,3 5 or 7 days and can be used for discount in Museums, Tours and restaurants among other attractions.

They are very big on sports in Boston and threre are the Red Sox baseball team, The Boston Celtics basketball and The New England Patriots Football team (American Football!!!!). Whichever bar you go in, you can be assured that there will a sports game on should it be football, basketball or baseball.

We were supposed to go on a trip to Cape Cod and take in Martha's vineyard and surrounding areas, but we ran out of time whcih was quite disappointing, so I will just have to go back and explore next time!!!!!!!! It was nice weather when we were there in April, but I have been told the best time to go is in the Fall (September/October) when the leaves all change colour.

I really enjoyed Boston, but felt that I did not have enough time to explore properly and see it as its best. I will definetly go back. There are quite a few airlines that offer flights such as American Airlines, Virgin Airlines. and British Airways. There is also KLM and Air France via Europe among others!!!!!

There are lots of hotels in Boston from budget to luxury hotels, such as Holiday Inn, Marriott, and Hilton. At the time of writing this, the exchange rate is just under 2 Dollars to the Pound so it is the best time to get value for money, and I am sure you will enjoy Boston!!!!!!

Budapest 2008

We flew to Budapest on Friday 1st Feb for a 3 night stay with Jet 2 from Manchester. The flight journey was 2 hrs and 16 minutes and the flights were very good. We had prebooked our seats to ensure extra leg room, and it is approx £7.50 per flight. I think it is definetly worth booking if you are on a flight over 2 hours as we had loads of space. Ryanair also fly from Liverpool and Malev from London. We had booked a Danube River View room at the Intercontinental Hotel in Pest as recommended by my colleague who had stayed there last year.

The airport is about 30 - 45 mins away from the city and I would recommend booking the airport shuttle bus. The taxis overcharge and if you have to get a taxi make sure that you agree a price before getting in and definetly make sure the meter is on zero. The minibus is approx £10 return. Budapest is split into 2 cities divided by the River Danube (often called the Blue Danube but believe me there is not anything blue aboout it!!!!!!). The currency used is Hungarian Forint (HUF). Pest is the newer area and Buda is where Castle Hill and the Royal Palace is.

The river view room we had booked was worth every penny, it had a huge panoramic window overlooking the River, Royal Palace and Buda. We arrived about 8ish and there was an English Pub behind the Hotel called the John Bull Pub. Although it said English Pub, there was not really anything English about it other then the painted Union Flag outside. The pub served English and Hungarian food, but it was difficult to get used to people smoking around you again after being smoke free since July.

The next day we got up early and went for breakfast at McCafe which is owned by Mcdonalds. The restaurant is split into 2, so one side is fast food and the other side is a cafe selling Coffee, Latte, Pastries and Cakes. They were very reasonable too. It was very cold but dry and we had expected rain but lucky for us, it did not rain until later in the afternoon when we were heading back to the hotel.

We walked over the Chain Bridge to Buda and got the Funicular up to Castle Hill in Buda. It was HUF 700 one way (approx £2.00) we decided we would be healthy and walk back down!!!!!. We saw the changing of the guard in the main square and walked to St Matyas Church and the Fisherman's Bastion.

The church was hidden on the outside by scaffolding, which is such a shame as it is a stunning building with a beautiful roof. The Fisherman's Bastion has turrets and arches and resembles a castle, however it was only built for show and have never been used as a bastion. You get stunning views over Pest, St Stephens Basilica and Parliment from the Bastion. Castle Hill is full of little narrow streets with Painted Buildings and No Fast food restaurants!!!!!!!, although there is a Hilton Hotel. Now I am sure that the Hilton is very nice but it sticks out like a sore thumb as there are all these old beautiful buildings then there is the Hilton which is a modern, glassy building and it just does not look right!!!!!!

We then had a walk around the grounds of the Royal Palace which houses the Hungarian National Gallery, the national library and has temporary collections for periods of time. We walked back down the hill which was a nice walk except our calves were killing us afterwards. We got back just before the rain started. After having a bit of a rest, we decided to have a walk around the shops as they were only 5 minutes walk from the hotel. There is a H & M, C & A (remember them!!!!!!), Mango and even a Marks & Spencers. The M & S store was like going back 20 years when M & S were known for dowdy clothes mainly for older people. There is a main area called Fashion Street which is under construction at the moment although some shops are open now. There will be stores such as Tommy Hilfiger, Ralph Lauren among others.

Getting about is very easy as there is the Metro, buses, trams, railways and the good old feet!!!!! We decided to see what we could on foot as I think you see more, although my feet are still suffering now!!!!!! We went to Longfords an Irish Bar (they are everywhere!!!!!) for tea as my hubby did not want to miss his beloved Liverpool playing!!! They offered a menu of English, Irish and Hungarian food. We had a walk round a few bars later trying out the pubs!!!!! We could not believe how quiet it was, everywhere was dead pretty much apart from a few people in another Irish Bar we stumbled across!!!!.

On the Sunday we had breakast at Cafe Anna which offered traditional Hungarian breakfasts and Pastries. It was actually quite warm today, we had wrapped up in a big coat, but ended up just wearing a jumper. We decided to walk along the riverside to the Parliment building which is a stunning building and can be seen for miles. Just behind Parliment is a small square with a sculpture of a small bridge with Imre Nagy standing looking over at the building. He was a former Prime Minster executed for his part in the Revolution. This is also one of the best spots to get a great photo of the Parliment Building.

We then walked to St Stephens Basilica which is one of the largest churches in Hungary and is a stuning old building. The dome can be seen for miles. We then walked to Andrassy Ut which is one of the main streets in Budapest said to be modelled on the Champs Elysees in Paris. It has lots of bars, cafes and shops such as Louis Vuitton, Guess and many others. It also home to the Opera House. The buildings are very old and beatiful, but because of all the fumes from the traffic, they have lost their colour and need a little TLC!!!!.

We were heading for Heroes Square and City Park and the Andrassy Ut seemed to go on for ever, at the other end of the road near to Heroes Square it is home to Embassies, lawyers and corporate companies. When you get to Heroes Square the first thing that catches your eye is the huge column of Angel Gabriel and statues of historic figures and a tomb of an unknown soldier. Behind the monuments is the City Park which houses the Zoo, Ice Rink and has lots of stalls, amusements and a boating lake. It also houses the Vajdahunyad Castle which has a Catholic Church in the grounds and a statue called Anonymous. This is a sculpture on a bench and is said to give writers who have writer's block inspiration!!!!. The Szechenyl Baths are also in City park. The baths is a medicinal spa which offers outdoor swimming all year round at 81 degrees constantly. Chess boards form part of the jettys around the pool.

Just at the edge of the park is the worlds largest Hour Glass which is rotated every new years eve. The park is really nice just strolling about and there were lots of familes enjoying the sunshine. As we made our way back down the Andrassy Ut, our feet were killing and we were starving so decided to have some junk food. We stopped at Burger King and was quite surprised to see that it was quite a smart restaurant as far as fast food restaurants go!!!!!! It was very clean and all done out like an American Diner and it was cheaper than Burger King is at home.

We saw that there was a T.G.I Friday on the same road and had decided that we were going to eat there that night, but when we got there we were told that the restaurant had been booked out all night as it was the USA Superbowl Final that night, so a group had booked the whole restaurant. We were gutted as we had been looking forward to it. We ended up at a Restaurant called Boxutca, which is a sport themed restaurant/cafe bar. The food was lovely and I even dared to have steak which was cooked perfectly!!!!! (I have a problem with steak being that it has to be well done all the way through with no pink, but you will be surprised how many chefs are unable to do this!!!!).

Our waiter was telling us that they also had a group booking from midnight for the Superbowl. When we had finished our food, we had a few drinks in the bar and made our way back to the Hotel. We had decided to get back before the Superbowl started as the bar was starting to get busy. The one thing that I did notice at night, was how many women walked about at night on their own in the dark. We did feel safe always but even so I do not think I would walk about on my own in the dark, but we saw lots of people doing it.

Our flight was not until 6.30pm, so we decided on our last day to see a few more sights and do some more walking!!!! (We are gluttons for punishment!!!!!). We made our way to the Great Synagogue which claims to be the largest in Europe and second largest in the world. It holds 3000 people and has a museum adjoining. The domes can be seen streets away and the Synagogue is a very striking building and you can go in and have a tour round it. In the courtyard at the back there is a silver weeping willow tree which has little leaves with names of families from the Holocaust. The Synagogue is also known as the Dohany Synagogue because it is on Dohany Street which translates to Tobacco!!!!

We decided to have a T.G.I Fridays lunch since we missed out last night and it worth the wait!!!!! On the way back down Andrassy Ut I asked my hubby to take me to Louis Vuitton to buy me a bag, but he was not playing!!!!
We noticed that it was very smoggy, so we were not sure if this was down to the town being busier with cars and pollution or if it was foggy. Either way I am glad we did not leave Castle Hill until today because we would not have seen much!!!!!.

If you go to Budpest for a holiday or just a weekend, it is worth checking to see if there are any concerts on. The Budapest Sport Arena advertised forthcoming concerts such as Kylie, Mark Knopfler, Chris Rea and the Show Stomp. There are also lots of sporting events held here.
On the minibus back to the airport we saw loads of signs for Tesco which is one of the main supermarkets in Hungary. We never saw any actual shops, so can ony presume that they are in the Suburbs. There is not a lot to buy in Budapest except the usual tack, but they are big on painted eggs, dolls, lace and crockery. A Hungarian sepciality is Goose Liver Pate, but this is very expensive (approx EUR20 for a very small tin!!!!!) I found the prices in Budapest to be comparable to those in the UK.

The flight back was nearly empty, we had a small delay that the plane left the gate but only circled and came back to the gate. Apparently there was something flashing that should not have been!!!! Needless to say an engineer came and fixed the problem and we set off ok.

Budapest is a lovely city and I would recommend it if you like old buildings and museums. The people are also friendly. For more information on Budapest, please see the official tourism site.
